Starting Out Safely - road safety education program

Funded by TAC, ELAA delivers Victoria’s early childhood road safety education program, Starting Out Safely.
This free 90-minute professional development (PD) session is suitable for ECEC teachers, educators, OHSC, playgroup leaders, Foundation Years teachers and tertiary students.
We will explore how to embed road safety education into the curriculum to support the child’s right to be an active participant in their community. The aim of road safety education is for educators to work with children and their families to develop skills, behaviours and attitudes that assists children to be safer on our roads as passengers, pedestrians and users of bicycles and other wheeled toys. Road safety education (RSE) requires intentional (thoughtful, purposeful, and deliberate) planning that articulates the way educators support children to acquire the skills to be effective road users into the future.Road safety education must be evidence based and match the child’s stage of development and level of independence as a road user. As children develop these skills, they become safe and active participants in their communities, now and into the future.
This will be an interactive professional development session which will include:
  • The statistics of child road trauma
  • Why children are at particular risk
  • Victoria’s Road Safety Strategy
  • Children as pedestrians, passengers, and cyclists
  • Safe carparks•Child car seats•Parent and community engagement and partnerships
