About the Artsist Ilena Clarke

Watercolour painting is one of Ileana’s favourite mediums because of its ability

for gestural, fluid movements. Over the years she has conducted watercolour

workshops covering genres such as landscape, still life and recently animal

portraits.

In addition, Ileana paints ‘plein air’ landscapes, in pursuit of fresh experiences

around Port Stephens and the Hunter region. Sometimes sketches are made

on site and often used as a source of reference developed into paintings.

Over the last 30 years Ileana has exhibited in solo and mixed shows and won

several art prizes locally and regionally. She currently exhibits at the Artisan

Collective Port Stephens and Community Art Centre Port Stephens and

occasionally with Newcastle Printmakers Workshop. Ileana is a casual tutor at

the Maitland Regional Gallery.

Ileana has illustrated three children’s books in watercolour written by John

‘Stinker’ Clarke. These are ‘The Adventures of Stinker and Stinkpot’, 'The True

Adventures of Clarabelle’ and ‘Kerosene Tin Jim, A Man Who Loved an

Island’. There have been two publications containing her artworks,

‘International Contemporary Artists Vol IX and Vol X’.

Ileana’s formal art education began at Hornsby TAFE followed by Commercial

Art, Randwick, Sydney; Advanced Diploma in Fine Art, Newcastle Art School;

followed by a Degree in Fine Art, Newcastle University.
