About

Why ‘civic statistics’ is critical for lifelong and life-wide learning
– a workshop with Professor Iddo Gal

This workshop focuses on issues associated with developing knowledge regarding statistics about 'burning' societal and economic topics, i.e., 'civic statistics', such as regarding crime, poverty, employment, income, environmental issues, social justice and others. Civic statistics are usually ignored in current educational practice, yet are important to adults and young people and understanding them is a resource for their lifelong and life-wide learning. We will review the unique characteristics of civic statistics (e.g., dynamic, multivariate societal phenomena, rich texts, rich visualizations, deeply contextualized, requiring critical thinking), work on hands-on illustrative media-based tasks, examine knowledge bases and dispositions needed to engage with and react to civic statistics, and reflect on implications for (adult) numeracy education.
