Language Activism with Gaja Kerry Charlton

Black History Month 2024 - An evening with Yagara Elder Gaja Kerry Charlton, presented by Brisbane City Council and Cre8tive Nations.

Gaja Kerry Charlton is a Yagara Elder, Traditional Owner, Language and Knowledge Custodian. She is a direct descendant of Kerwalli of Brisbane (Magandjin) and was taught by his elderly grandchildren. Gaja Kerry grew up in a culturally resilient family who experienced three generations under “the Act. ”

This led her into language revival efforts and deepening research to repatriate Language and culture to achieve a vision of Yagara Language spoken again on Yagara Country. Gaja Kerry also works to reframe the historical errors, outdated narratives and exploitation of Goori cultural heritage. Her Language Fellowship at UQ to translate tapes of family Elders recorded between 1950 and ’60 brings new insights and cultural knowledge relating to place names, traditional stories and songs, Lore-Law, Protocols, customs, names of Clans, Tribes and geographical features.

This event is proudly presented by Brisbane City Council and Cre8tive Nations as part of Black History Month 2024.
