School holiday program-Japanese cultural experience for kids

Join our first joint school holiday workshop - Nerikiri(Japanese confectionery) and Japanese calligraphy!

At this workshop participants will experience a rich blend of Japanese culture and discover a love for the arts and crafts of Japan.

In the workshop participants will be able to choose from three sets of Japanese written characters; Hiragana, Katakana, or Kanji. They also will learn how to shape Nerikiri(Japanese confectionery). Between each session, we will have a short break and play some Japanese craft games such as Origami, Ayatori(cat's cradle), Kamifusen(paper ballon), Use chopsticks to catch some toy eggs, chocolate and lollies.

*The participants are able to take their own art home after the workshop

*Please make sure there's someone to pick up participant as the program runs from 10am and ends at 2pm

* Nerikiri is gluten-free and vegan friendly.

*Nerikiri Ingredients: Adzuki beans, Lima beans, sugar, glutinous rice flour(it's gluten-free, despite its name), agar, black sesame seeds and narural food colouring.

*Please inform us if your child(ren) have any food allegies.

Japanese calligraphy instractor-Maiko Howell

Maiko was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan and began doing calligraphy at age 5 under the guidance of her mother - also a calligrapher. Maiko became a master of Japanese traditional calligraphy in 2017 and has held workshops for children and adults throughout Eastern Japan, and now lives in Tasmania with her family.

Nerikiri(Japanese confectionery) instructor-Minako Stewart

Minako has started making Nerikiri regularly since 2021 and has graduated from two Nerikiri courses with Japanese teachers. She is also a Kimono teacher, Tea ceremony and Japanese dance practitioner. She is excited to share the beauty of Japanese culture with you!
