Women's Self Defense and Situational Awareness Training

A holistic training session encompassing situational awareness, de-escalation techniques and self defense

At Speakeasy Theatre, we take women's safety very seriously and are committed to empowering our community. To support this, we have organised comprehensive self-defense lessons designed to enhance personal safety and confidence. These sessions cover a wide range of techniques, addressing not only physical defense but also situational awareness, risk assessment, and verbal de-escalation strategies. By equipping women with these vital skills, we aim to foster a safer and more secure environment for everyone.

During this 90-minute session you’ll learn both situational awareness and self-defence techniques that support, inform, train most importantly empower attendees. The techniques are based on Brazilian Jit Jitsu and the principles of leverage, timing, and energy efficiency, meaning anyone can do them regardless of age or athletic ability. A male co-facilitator allows the attendees to see the techniques work! Beyond the physical techniques the program reinforces situational awareness, risk assessment and verbal and psychological strategies attendees can use to set boundaries and feel safe.

The training aims to empower attendees to not only prevent violence but to also decrease fear and anxiety and increase confidence, self-efficacy, and self-esteem. Learning self-defence can help you feel stronger and more confident in your body. The attendees of other groups report more comfortable interactions with strangers, acquaintances, and intimates, both in situations that seem dangerous and those that do not.

What to wear: We will be going through some practical self-defence techniques. It would be ideal to wear activity wear or something you can move around comfortably in (no heels). You may also need to remove watches and rings (they can scratch each other with some of the techniques). Don’t worry if you have any injuries or physical restraints, we’ll work around those (I promise, it’s not too physical taxing).

Facilitators: Tracey and Adam McCurdy. You can read more about us here: https://atsc.net.au/about-us/
